- Gutter size against the roof area draining into it
- Where the water is discharged, and how far from the foundation
- Number and position of downspouts
- Condition of the fascia behind the old gutter
Downspouts are where most systems actually fail — too few of them, or discharging straight against the foundation.
Size matters more than people think. Five-inch gutter on a large steep roof will overshoot in heavy rain no matter how clean it is.
Check the fascia before the gutter goes back up. Hanging new metal off soft wood buys you a year.

Behind it: salt corroding fasteners and flashing years before the covering wears out. Airborne salt corrodes anything ferrous — nails, valley metal, vent collars, gutter hangers — years before the covering itself is worn out.

I have solar panels. What happens to them?
Panels have to be detached and reset. Budget for it separately and coordinate the two trades. Never put a new solar array on a roof with under ten years left.
